Time To Spring Clean Your HVAC!

Although it may not feel like it for most us, Spring has arrived! It won't be long now before the long, cold winter is just a distant memory, and it'll be time to start packing away the winter clothes and looking forward to the warmer months.
The arrival of spring not only means we can begin opening the windows of our homes and letting the fresh air in, it also means that, before we know it, the temperatures will be rising again, and that air conditioner you weren’t using for the past six months is a little bit dusty.
That being said, it’s important to make sure your AC unit is in good working condition before you turn it on fully. So, how do you do that? Here’s what you need to know:
Check for Wear and Inspect All Air Vents
Before you can even turn your air conditioning on, it’s important to make sure it’s actually going to be able to do what you need it to do. Checking any exposed ductwork you have in your home and making sure it isn’t damaged or worn out is a key step. If the ductwork is damaged, you could experience a loss of cool air and a very high electric bill (heating and cooling account for around 48% of the energy use in a typical U.S. home, making it the largest energy expense for most homes).
You also need to make sure that none of the air vents in your home are blocked or covered by things like furniture or drapes. This will cut off the air flow to your home, making your HVAC system a pointless tool.
Change Your Filter
Each air conditioning unit has an air filter. These filters need to be changed once every three months or so, which makes now the perfect time to do that. If you don’t change your air filter regularly, it can get clogged and cause serious issues for your home. This regular HVAC maintenance task is just one way to help get the most out of your unit.
Check Your Outdoor Unit As Well
If you have an outdoor air conditioning unit, you have to take care of that as well. Even though it’s outdoors, that doesn’t mean it can run properly without regular HVAC maintenance.
Some regular HVAC maintenance tips for an outdoor unit include clearing out leaves, vines, or debris which can cause performance issues. You also need to make sure that there aren’t any missing panels on the sides of your outdoor unit. These panels ensure electrical connections are safe and not at risk of causing a fire.
